Here are five great love songs created by indie rock artists, and some background and critique about each.

Love songs, have been a popular fixture in music for centuries. There is no other human emotion, as powerful or as complex, as the feeling of love; giving rise to a popular source of inspiration among musicians. The vast arrays of emotion that are experienced from love have helped to create some of Indie-Rock’s most unique and inspiring songs. Here are five exceptional love songs, created by Indie-Rock Artists.

“Together” - The Raconteurs (a.k.a. The Saboteurs)

From the band’s debut album, “Broken Boy Soldiers”, released in May of 2006.

The song “Together” encompasses a distinctive classic rock sound, similar to classic rock bands; Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. The resemblance is most apparent during the song’s chorus, which contains an appealing contrast between the shrill and soulful sound of Jack White’s voice and the soft and calm tones of singer, Brandon Benson. The lyrics to the song depict the qualities of genuine love, claiming it as timeless and unique, while highlighting its inability to be bound by the cast of unrealistic romantic clichés.

“O Valencia!” - The Decemberists

From the band’s fourth studio album, “The Crane Wife”, released in 2006 (lyrics written by Colin Meloy and music composed by The Decemberists).

“O Valencia!” is a tragic love story that follows the romance of a young couple, whose families oppose their being together. The heartbreaking ballad, similar to the story of “Romeo and Juliet”, illustrates the couple’s romance from its love-struck beginning to its tragic conclusion. The song resembles an Elizabethan era fantasy, from the distinctive sound of Colin Meloy’s characteristic voice and its dynamic melody.

“Unconditional” - The Bravery

From the band’s debut album, “The Bravery”, released in 2005.

The New York City band has an enticing sound; an appealing mix of indie rock and dance electronic that is similar to the British indie rock band, Placebo. “Unconditional” was released as the band’s third single and is featured in the 2005 video game, “Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland”. The song is about an immense desire for unconditional love, in reaction to only obtaining demanding superficial relationships.

“Read My Mind” - The Killers

From the band’s second album,”Sam’s Town”, released in February of 2007.

The Las Vegas rock band’s lead singer, Brandon Flowers, referred to “Read My Mind”, as “the best song I have ever written”; in an interview with radio station Q101 in Chicago. The song experienced huge success after its 2007 release including, being ranked at #62 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and a People’s Choice Award nomination in 2008.“Read My Mind” is a soulful tune about re-claiming lost love and recognizing its importance.

“Soul Meets Body”- Death Cab for Cutie

From the band’s fifth studio album, “Plans”, released in 2005

The song, “Soul Meets Body” is the first single released from the Grammy nominated, indie rock band’s fifth album. The hit song has a capricious tone, with its upbeat melody and idealistic lyrics. The song’s message conveys the eternal love of soul mates, being an essential part of each other.

Even though each song may be different, with its own unique meaning; they all share a common inspiration, love. The songs on this list were just a few of the incomparable love songs that have been created by indie rock artists.
