Broken Truth, a four-piece Omaha band, performs weekly at the trendy nightspot, Nomad. Its debut At the Water's Edge is proof of its "strategic noise making."

This is the time for Broken Truth. Emotive lyrics and commanding ownership of not-so subtle rock music, this four-piece Omaha based band is primed to take what it calls on its liner notes a “collection of strategic noise makers” beyond the studio walls.

Fable Beginnings

The name is taken from the children’s story, Old Turtle and the Broken Truth, a fable by writer Douglas Wood, who captured the essence of sharing happiness and power with all likes of people. Broken Truth channels this same energy, this same sense of love, to create momentous harmonies and crisp blues-laden power pop tracks in its debut At the Waters Edge.

At the helm and keys for Broken Truth is Tyler J. Johnson, a master of taking audiences on a musical journey of story-telling, pop rock pieces to the elegant piano-driven songs, through the likes of Elton John and John Lennon.

“I channel John Lennon when I write,” the Spencer, Iowa, native shared, during an interview at Nomad Lounge, on Wednesday, August 5. “When I’m writing, I have a space in my work-area where sometimes an Oshawa Zen Taro deck of cards will spill because I’m pounding on the keys so hard. Occasionally, I will let them direct me to where I should take the song next.”

Bassist and orchestration strategist, Jared Rodehorst engages audiences with attention to artistic expression and logical marriage to Johnson’s lyrics. Rodehorst’s voice compliments melodies and refrains, infusing new dimensions to Broken Truth’s music.

Guitar virtuoso, Andrew Malashock cradles the riffs in his arms the same way this band nurtures each and every note, word and journey it invites listeners to experience. Percussionist Alex Wimmer’s thundering introduction to “Know the Way” is proof that Broken Truth shares the contemporary sounds of the likes of Better Than Ezra, U2, Ben Folds –at the same time—honoring the endearing sounds of Styx, Pink Floyd and The Beatles.

Broken Truth is passionate and threads its music through life’s positive journeys, like a turtle entering the water’s edge. In “Your Own Song” and “Find Me There” Johnson’s narrative leaves little doubt of messages of self-awareness and belief. Broken Truth resonates with sojourners on a quest for connecting through music. Simply put, Broken Truth not only performs rock, they live it.
